REVIEW – Hillary’s Breakfast Sausages

I stumbled upon Hillary’s brand which I never heard of before, and I thought to myself, why not give it a shot? Turns out, it was a decision I won’t regret!

I found these at my local Co-op, and at Whole Foods. Hillary’s makes plant based burgers as well as sausages. I tried the Organic Apple Maple, and the Organic Spicy Veggie Sausage. I was worried that the Apple Maple might be sweet, but they were not at all. The Spicy variety had a bit of heat, but are not extremely spicy.

The ingredient list for all of Hillary’s products is quite impressive. Not only are they organic, but the sausages are made with millet, lentils, hemp seeds, and flax. And although they do contain some oil, these ingredients are a far cry from the bulk of vegan sausages that are mostly made of fats.

In addition, Hillary’s are free of:

  • egg and dairy (obviously)
  • soy
  • gluten
  • peanut
  • coconut
  • sulfites
  • corn
  • tree nuts
  • sesame

The drawback (for some people anyway), might be the fact that the texture of Hillary’s sausages is a bit crumbly and not hyper realistic. This is not an issue for me, because I don’t really love vegan meats that are extremely meat-like – such as Beyond, or Impossible products. Plus the ingredients are so wholesome, and at only 100 calories each, frankly I think that the texture is just not a problem at all.

I have never microwaved them, but they come out perfect cooked in a pan, or baked. We have used these veggie breakfast sausages as a side with chickpea omelettes, tossed them in burritos, lasagna or in sausage, vegg & cheese breakfast sandwiches.

Hillary’s sausages are a steal at just $3.99 for four! That’s an amazing deal, especially when you consider the prices of other vegan sausages on the market.
